Konference

• Particles in Flows Summer School August 25 - 31 + Workshop August 27, 2014. The whole course and workshop will be held at the Institute of Mathematics of the Academy of Sciences of Czech Republic. The aim of the summer school is to present a comprehensive series of lectures on various aspects of problems involving particles in flows. It is organized as a multidisciplinary event with topics ranging from theoretical and numerical mathematics up to physics and applications. The emphasize will be on models related to topics originating in environmental, biomedical and industrial applications. The summer course is prepared for graduate students, young scientists, and other interested specialists. Besides of the course lectures, the program will include a one day workshop (on Wednesday, August 27) dedicated to short, more advanced lectures given by attending scientists.

• Řešení Goldbachovy hypotézy On Aug 14, 2014, at the International Congress of Mathematicians, Harald Helfgott spoke about his proof of the ternary Goldbach conjecture, which states that every odd number n greater than 6 is expressible as the sum of three primes. The proof went by using estimation techniques from analytic number theory to show that the statement is true for n greater than 10^28, and computer verification to show it is true for n less than that bound.

• Z virtuální reality vám asi bude špatně (VTM) Příchod virtuální reality s sebou přinese i nečekané problémy. Může způsobit podobné potíže jako třeba mořská nemoc.
• Biologové vyrobili 3D model mozkové tkáně (tyden) Pěstovat živé nervové buňky zvládají vědci už dlouho. Přinutit je ale, aby vytvořily strukturu aspoň vzdáleně podobnou uspořádání lidského mozku, bylo však těžší. Teď už badatelé vědí, jak na to.

Robotika

• Stopující robot dorazil v Kanadě na konec cesty (ČN) Robot s úsměvem nasvíceným LED žárovkou putoval přes léto stopem napříč Kanadou v rámci sociálního experimentu na téma, jaká je interakce mezi lidmi a jejich mechanickými protějšky.

Statistika

• Zločin odhalíme dřív, než se stane. A není to sci-fi (VTM) Matematika a statistika může pomoci při odhalování zločinů, které se ještě nestaly. To není námět na film ani seriál, ale již fungující policejní systém v USA.

Zajímavosti, inspirace

• Skutečně škola zabíjí touhu po vzdělání? (ČP) Ani závěry některých textů, které se nedávno věnovaly mezinárodním šetřením, nebrání sugerovat, že vyšší výskyt českých žáků ve skupině těch, kteří školu nemají rádi, a nižší zastoupení těch, kteří tvrdí opak, se musí promítnout do špatných vzdělávacích výsledků.
• Neurčitost, které se nemůžeme zbavit (VTM) Čím přesněji známe hodnotu jedné veličiny, tím méně přesně můžeme změřit hodnotu druhé.
